Skip the line and visit the Accademia Gallery that hosts the Michelangelo's David, the most famous sculpture in the world, which was transferred here to the specially designed tribune from Piazza della Signoria in 1873.

Here you can also admire The Prisoners and St. Matthew of Michelangelo, as well as masterpieces of other Florentine sculptors going from the thirteenth to the late sixteenth century. The Gallery was founded by Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine as an educational collection of paintings for the Academy of Fine Arts’ students.

The Gallery includes important works from the major artists operating in and around Florence from the thirteenth century until the end of the sixteenth century. They are mostly religious paintings representing a unique cultural heritage. On the first floor you will find a special collection of great late-gothic altarpieces and icons, collected over time from many parts of the world.

The Accademia Gallery houses the Department of Musical Instruments too, containing important musical instruments from the Medici and Lorraine collections and former possession of the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini.

Masterpieces

In addition to the famous Michelangelo's masterpieces, the collection features also some Florentine paintings from the 13th century up to the 16th century, plasters by Lorenzo Bartolini and Luigi Pampaloni and a series of Russian icons. Moreover you can find a display of old musical instruments from the Medici and Lorraine families that was open in 2001.
